Welcome to the childbirth support services of Three Sisters, located in Troy, New York. The midwives and monitrices of Three Sisters offer women and families holistic pregnancy, birth and postpartum support services, including homebirth midwifery, hospital labor support and lactation counseling.
What is a midwife?
Midwives are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional and social support for childbearing women and gynecological care for women of all ages. Midwives work in client’s homes, the office setting, as well as hospitals and clinics. We believe that each woman should be cared for as a unique individual, providing customized care every step of the way.
The midwives of Three Sisters are trained as traditional birth attendants providing holistic, woman-centered care. We are Certified Midwives through the American College of Nurse-Midwives and licensed to practice in New York. We are also Certified Professional Midwives with over 35 years of combined experience in out-of-hospital birth. Services provided include homebirth, waterbirth, well-woman exams, lactation counseling, and family planning options. Our team approach allows us to provide multiple sources of support for each family.
What is a Monitrice?
A monitrice is a birth attendant who, in addition to providing emotional and physical support, is also trained to assess mother and baby’s physical well-being during labor and birth. The Sisters are all trained as midwives and can provide the birthing family with vital information about how labor is progressing with tools such as assessment of dilation, monitoring baby’s heart rate, and observing whether labor is progressing normally. This information can be important to helping the family decide when is the right time to move to the planned place of birth.
